The Dominican Republic is a sovereign state located in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean Sea. It occupies the eastern five-eighths of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the nation of Haiti. The Dominican Republic is the second-largest Caribbean nation by area (after Cuba) at 48,445 square kilometers (18,705 sq mi), and third by population with 10,349,000 people, of which approximately three million live in the metropolitan area of Santo Domingo, the capital city.

The Dominican Republic’s history and culture is a blend of European, African, and Amerindian influences. The country is known for its musical styles, especially merengue and bachata, as well as for its traditional foods and drinks, such as sancocho, la bandera (rice, beans, and meat), and rum.

The Dominican Republic is a unitary state governed by a presidential republic. The President of the Dominican Republic is both head of state and head of government. Executive power is exercised by the president and his/her cabinet. Legislative power is vested in the bicameral National Congress. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.

The Dominican Republic has a market-based economy with a growing service sector and a relatively high level of industrialization. The country is the largest economy in the Caribbean and Central American region and is the eighth largest in Latin America. The Dominican Republic is classified as a middle-income developing country by the World Bank.

The Dominican Republic is not a party to the extradition treaty between the United States and the Dominican Republic. This means that if someone is wanted by the United States for a crime, they can flee to the Dominican Republic and the Dominican Republic will not extradite them back to the United States.

This can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing depending on your perspective. Some people may see it as a good thing because it provides a safe haven for people who are wanted by the United States. Others may see it as a bad thing because it allows criminals to evade justice.
